What to expect at auditions?

We understand you might be nervous about auditions, especially if this is your first show. The best way to calm the nerves is to go in knowing what to expect. So here it is! When you arrive to Davidow Hall at Salem Community College, you will be greeted by one of our volunteers at our welcome table. There you will fill out two forms; an audition form and a release form. Once you have filled out your forms you will head into the auditorium or classroom and wait to audition. When you are called to audition, you will hand your audition form to our director. You will be handed a page from the script to read from.  You may be reading with someone else auditioning that you may not know and that's ok! It's a great way to make new friends! You may also want to use this time to relax, focus and practice your song. If you are auditioning for the straigh show, you do not need to sing a song. If you are auditioning for a musical, please have a song prepared to sing a cappella or with accompaniment. You may practice your song in the foyer, in the bathroom with great acoustics, outside or in your car. Just remember to warm up those vocals chords!

When you are called to the stage you will read from the script and then sing your song (if you are auditioning for a musical). Your song can be broadway musical,  your favorite song, or it can be as simple as Happy Birthday!  The music director might also ask you to sing scales at the piano. We are looking for confidence, vocal range, and volume. So speak and sing loudly and clearly so that the people in the back can hear you.

Once the auditions are over you will receive an email or a phone call about your role. A cast list will also be posted on our social media and on the website under the "CAST LISTS" tab.
